lovely day new plantings

So warm in greenhouse I planted bell peppers, eggplant, sunflower replacements the snails devoured while out of town and cantaloupe. Got my hanging flower pots situated on a sign holder in the ground. Lots of snail bait sprinkled in outside barrels. Planted 3 zucchini in barrel with mammoth raspberries and nude lemon tree the snails stripped. Put 2 yellow squash in another smaller planter of mammoth raspberries.

Sunny Day

Today the basil, broccoli, sun gold tomatoes, yellow crookneck, zucchini, poinsett cucumbers, jack be little pumpkin, one celebrity tomato and blue morning glories have germinated. The air is cool but warm in the greenhouse and the two old pepper plants that wintered over are sending out new leaves. The 2 super marzano tomato plants are doing well. Didn't find any more slugs or snails today in greenhouse. I planted my sweetpeas in planters next to the greenhouse on the deck. The outside soil is saturated from all the rain and the pond is full. Still have another bag of strawberries to get planted need to buy another bag of potting soil. I will soon run out of pots in which to plant. Tonight is the yacht club potluck and Bruce made a nice stew for our contribution. So good to see the sun.

planted

Today my heavenly blue morning glories are already germinating as is one poinsett cucumber.
Snail and slug duty in yard and greenhouse produced 2 dozen for the salt bath, foggy & wet conditions.

Cleared out the shelves in greenhouse for germination. Some of the seeds are old so I don't expect much germination of them. Others are 2008 vintage and a few 2010.
I planted the following this morning:

red okra
spinach
hupa pole beans
broccoli
scarlet runner beans
golden bantam corn
pumpkins
moulin rouge sunflowers
cabbage
sweet williams
baby breath
fireball & stupice tomatoes
orange wild colombine

Today I went to the seed and plant exchange and acquired many new varieties to supplement the ones I already have in my stash.  Also an unmarked tree that looks to be a fig.

I planted the morning glories that have been soaking 24 hours. I was excited to find some sungold tomato seeds which were unavailable locally. I got an assortment of bean seeds including hupa beans, scarlet runner beans, January King Cabbage, red burgundy okra, poinsett 98 cucumbers, triple play sweet corn, bloomsdale spinach, broccoli collabrese, romaine lettuce, radish cherriette, yellow crookneck, golden bantam corn, moulin rouge sunflower,4 oclocks, and covent garden baby breath. Now I am excited to get more starts planted. Maybe tomorrow the sun will come out. I do need to get the Mammoth raspberries in the ground.

2011 Garden Journal

March 26, 2011
Today I am soaking fresh morning glory and 2002 4 o'clock seeds to enhance germination. I am planning on growing heavenly blue MG up an arbor at the entry to my front yard. I will grow them in paper pots made from newspapers and filled with potting soil in the greenhouse for a few weeks before planting in the ground. I am also seeding jack be little squash. I planted 3 Celebrity saved tomato seeds. I was able to buy some vegetable and flower seeds for 20 cents a pkg at Walmart this week. The quantities are small but I don't need many of each variety.

My thornless Mammoth raspberry plants and Heritage raspberry plants arrived in todays mail from Henry Field's and Gurney's nurseries. They have a nice root system and buds seem to be alive. I will plant the rest of my strawberry order in pots tomorrow, varieties Honeoye and Eversweet. The dollar tree in Crescent City had some nice buckets with rope handles in stock so I purchased 10 for growing pots. I got some plastic cloches on the internet to protect them from the slugs and snails. I also planted 9 purple passion asparagus plants in a large pot along with some mail ordered bare root Ozark Beauty strawberry starts. One Apache thornless blackberry start I planted in a clay pot. I am watering with buckets of rain water as the rain has been incessantly beating down for weeks. Hubby finally repaired the greenhouse vent as the gale force winds ripped it apart.
